See Back to the Future: the Musical at the Manchester Opera House

From the producers of Ghost the Musical, and creators of the cult 1985 sci-fi film comes a brand new musical. Back to the Future the Musical is the long-awaited stage adaptation, bringing Marty McFly back to the present. The show opens at Manchester Opera House in early 2020 and later transfers to the West End. Having such a large fan base, tickets for Back to the Future are in huge demand so make sure you get your tickets early! The book by Bob Gale, who worked on the film, stays close to the motion picture. It follows teenage Marty, then played by the fresh-faced Michael J Fox, who unintentionally travels back in time. Arriving 30 years in the past, Marty meets his parents as teenagers. He develops a friendship with his father and the love interest of his mother. He goes to work matchmaking, while also on a mission to return to his own time. But will he inadvertently impact the future? And will Marty ever make it back? Gale was inspired to write the film script when wondering what it would be like to meet his father as an adolescent. Together with Robert Zemeckis, the pair wrote what would become a worldwide phenomenon. Their blockbuster was the highest-grossing of that year, but its legacy extends to this day. It lead to spin offs, an animated series, theme parks, video games, and comics – and now this spectacular musical. Gale couldn’t be happier about the adaptation. “We’re thrilled that we can retell our story on stage in a brand-new way, and we’re certain that Back to the Future fans all over the world will share our enthusiasm. In the words of Marty McFly, ‘your kids are gonna love it’ – and so will you and your parents. There’s truly no better way to celebrate the movie’s 35th Anniversary, and we’re happy to say ‘The Future’ is coming back!” Not only does the musical have a book by the film’s original creator, it also features brand new music by Grammy-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy-winner Glen Ballard. Songs include ‘The Power of Love’ and ‘Johnny B. Goode’. Joining the talented creative team is Tony Award-winning director John Rando. Olly Dobson will also play Michael J Fox’s quintessential ‘Marty’ following his roles in ‘Matilda’ and ‘Bat Out of Hell’. The film’s iconic status mean that Back to the Future tickets will likely fly from box offices. But unlike the musical, there’s no travelling back in time, so make sure you get yours quick!

About

With its classical façade and constantly changing shows, the Opera House is one of Manchester’s most distinctive and high output commercial touring theatres. Along with its sister venue The Palace Theatre, the 1,920-seater Opera House attracts all the hottest touring musicals, ballet, concerts and pantomimes to the North of England, earning its reputation as an iconic Manchester landmark. The Opera House originally opened under the name the New Theatre in 1912 before it was renamed the Opera House in 1920. The theatre operated for almost sixty years before it was closed in 1979, spending the next five years being used as a bingo hall. Thankfully the Opera House was acquired by the Palace Trust in 1984 and returned to its original function as a theatre how it's thrived ever since. The Opera House has a storied history of presenting musicals in particular as the site of West Side Story’s European premiere in 1958 and the regional debut of The Phantom of the Opera in 1993. If you find yourself with an evening spare and fancy tapping your toes to your favourite songs, the Opera House will help you do just that.
