Brilliantly reimagined by acclaimed director Julie Taymor, Disney's beloved film has been transformed into a spectacular theatrical experience that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. Taymor oversaw every inch of the creation of the show, pulling in a wide range of theatrical styles, conventions and traditions from around the world to help tell the story and transform it into the global giant it is today. She worked tirelessly on the production down to the costume design, masks and puppetry as well as additional lyrics. In light of her amazing production, Taymor won two Tony Awards in 1998 for Best Direction of a Musical and for Best Costumes. Looking for cheap tickets to see The Lion King? TickX can help you to find the best tickets for evening performances and matinées. In general, tickets are cheaper on weekdays but if you book over four weeks in advance you can find tickets to evening performances on weekends from just £35. The stage production brings many of the songs of the 1994 movie to life including ‘I Just Can’t Wait to Be King’, ‘Be Prepared’, ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Circle of Life’ adding to this with more Africa-inspired musical numbers. One of the most famous aspects of the production is it’s costumes, which were ingeniously designed by Julie Taymor and Michael Curry to perfectly mimic the movements and style of the animals of the Savannah, all whilst retaining the character of the actor portraying them. The London production swept the Laurence Oliver awards the year it debuted in 1999, earning nine nominations across Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Director, Best Theatre Choreographer, Best Set Design, Best Costume Design and Best Light Design, ultimately taking home the awards in Choreography and Costumes. The Broadway show also has collected its fair share of awards, earning itself five Tony Awards and Eight Drama Desk Awards. Tickets for Disney’s The Lion King are on sale now.
