Back with a bang, the annual celebration of fireworks and festivals is upon us with lots of events in a city near you.
The haunting chant that instantly comes to mind in the build up to Bonfire Night (‘Remember, remember the 5th November’) has seemingly had an impact. More than four centuries after Guy Fawkes attempted to explode the Houses of Parliament, we certainly haven't forgotten and are still burning effigies of him. But let’s face it, how many of us think about the evening's historic heritage? Today Bonfire Night is associated with colourful firework displays and raucous parties - and no place is quite so lively as the capital of the North East.
Newcastle has a range of spectacular firework shows to offer this year, whether it’s on the grounds of stately homes or set against the backdrop of the North Sea. Cosy up with comfy shoes and knitted hats and scarves and head out into town to celebrate the century-old tradition.
Or if you prefer to stay warm this Guy Fawkes Night and the thought of barging through crowds to get close to a bonfire just doesn’t cut it, there’s plenty of other events going on in the city. From club nights to live music, and elegant theatre performances to crackling comedy, there’s bound to be something to warm you up this Bonfire Night in Newcastle.
