The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Sir William Shakespeare's playing company, and was home to the world famous plays of Shakespeare for a short time until it went up in flames in 1644 during a performance of 'Henry VIII'.

The theatre was rebuilt the following the year, only to suffer again at the hands of of the Puritans and their rampage against theatre in 1642. Now Shakespeare's Globe stands approximately 750 feet from the original site and hosts regular theatre.
