One of the most recognisable musical groups around the world, the Spice Girls achieved global domination from the start as their debut single 'Wannabe' soared to number one in 37 countries. The fivesome composed of Geri Horner (formerly Halliwell), Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham (formerly Adams) found fame as their alter egos; Ginger, Scary, Sporty, Baby and Posh, respectively. They made their way to the top of the UK charts on nine occasions, with their first two albums hitting number one of charts both at home and around the world.
From 1996 onwards, everyone knew of the Spice Girls. They can arguably be considered a phenomenon that arose from the world of pop and defined a new era of girl power. Tracks such as 'Say You'll Be There', '2 Become 1', 'Viva Forever', and 'Spice Up Your Life' are just a few of their classic hits that caused a international hysteria, leading to the release of 'Spice World' the movie in 1997. Their wide-reaching success has established them as the best-selling girl group of all time, scoring total sales of over 85 million to beat out the likes of The Andrews Sisters, TLC and Destiny's Child.
But with such overwhelming success, tensions developed and in May 1998, Geri announced she had departed from the Spice Girls. Fans around the world shed a tear, having no idea that they would later reunite as a five piece at the 2012 Olympics in London. Since the group went on hiatus, they each enjoyed solo careers and projects, continuing to be present in the news and on social media. In 2018, rumours of a reunion tour sparked - causing yet another media frenzy as fans now eagerly await the return of the fab five. Though reports claim Victoria will not be present at a future tour, recent images of the group photographed together and their one-off shows such as the Olympics show how their 'friendship never ends'.
