See Wicked at the Apollo Victoria
Wicked is one of the longest-running musicals in the West End. It’s been seen by millions of London theatre-goers and received over 100 international awards. Since making its debut on Broadway in 2003, Wicked has surpassed other top shows in ticket sales. Today, it is a theatre sensation ranking among the most popular musicals of all time.
The musical takes audiences on a magical journey back to Oz. It tells the story of Elphaba the Wicked Witch and Glinda the Good Witch, who meet at sorcery school. Elphaba’s emerald green skin has always made her feel like an outcast, but her and Glinda soon become friends. But not everyone is so accepting of Elphaba, and soon their friendship is put to the test. Together they must battle various obstacles in the way of ambition, morality and even love.
The plot derives from from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which reimagines the backstories of these two iconic characters. It provides the prequel to the infamous ‘Wizard of Oz’, and gives plenty of nods to the classic 1939 film. We revisit the yellow brick road, flying monkeys, ruby slippers and house wrecking tornadoes once again. But more importantly, we learn what lead Elphaba to become the Wicked Witch of the West.
The retelling of the beloved film is full of humour, spectacular costumes and special effects, and mesmerising songs. The unforgettable soundtrack was created by Academy Award-winning Stephen Schwartz, a film a theatre veteran. His songs like ‘Defying Gravity’ no doubt contributed to Wicked’s impressive accolade collection – which includes a Grammy!
Hailed as “one of the West End’s true modern classics” (metro), Wicked is certainly a must-see production, so don’t miss out and get tickets here!
